When was this change made? I wasn't aware of it until I saw this poll (though I've been pretty inactive on dA since school started up again...).

I'm not surprised though - this seems to fall in line with their other recent changes, such as changing the :devusername: function to @username. I can see it from their marketing / ergonomics standpoint - they assume that users are likely using other social networks such as twitter and instagram, and the use of the @ and # symbols are pervasive on those and are becoming so on other networks (eg facebook) as well. It makes sense to use them, because they assume they are familiar to the user.

I definitely agree that the # is more of a "teeny" thing, or at least has that stigma. The younger generation is inherently more open to accepting these changes, partially because they don't have as much experience with older norms, and partially because they're the largest user base on the social networking sites that have been actively using the #/@ tags. With as much as it's getting forced down everyone else's throat as well now - from dA's changes to the media (seriously like every fanbase interaction TV show and every news station advertises "tweet your thoughts with #thisshowisthebest #whateverwhatever !!!") - I see it becoming less of a "teeny hip" thing and slowly trickling through the middle generations, especially as the "hip" ones get a bit older.

That said, they definitely didn't handle the transition very well if it didn't transfer your old tags to the new system, and that's a big problem. :/
